With all the buzz and hype, we sometimes lose sight of the fact that social media is young. And due to that relative youth, both leading practitioners and researchers are still just starting to sink their teeth into the subject. This morning I was lucky enough to interview a Phd student from the University of Maryland’s ebiquity Research Group who has been researching social media longer than most (i.e. 2 years!).
Akshay Java was nice enough to chat with me about ebiquity, his prior research, his current and future research plans (hint: it involves measuring influence in the blogosphere), the state of social media research today and more.
Enjoy:
If you’re interested in learning more about the science of measuring influence online, you might also enjoy my podcast interviews with Flemming Madsen of Onalytica and Howard Kaushansky of Umbria.

Interesting interviews with Flemming and Howard, not least because they are working in the same field as me. Judo Socialware has been working in this space for 6 years, the last three years face to face with clients through our ASOMO service (www.asomo.net).I could hear a great deal of common ground but also we each have our own particular emphasis. A frequent challenge for us is communicating to several different functions / departments the applications of the intelligence. Good to have a forum to discuss these things - nice work!(I hope to listen to the interview with Akshay and others sometime soon).
